The 16th century was when travelling freak shows first became popular. So over the centuries they have produced many dark and interesting stories of freaks and their lives on the road. It might sound harsh to call them freaks but we live in a different era now and there is really no other word for them. So from the pig-faced lady to the elephant man, these are the 10 most shocking old freak acts. Our Video on This: 10) Minnie Woolsey: Born in 1880, Minnie Woolsey was billed under the name “KooKoo the bird girl”. Suffering from a very rare skeletal disorder, she had a small head and a narrow face. She also had no teeth or hair and is thought to have been completely blind. When performing, she would wear a native-American costume and speak in a made up language. She didn’t seem to do much other than dance around covered in feathers. But she was so well respected that she featured in the film Freaks, a film that was banned from showing for 30 years. Like most travelling freaks her background is very mysterious. The only thing we know about her early life is that she was rescued from a mental asylum. We also don’t know when she died. But she was still performing in 1960, aged 80. This is a list of the 6 most amazing technological advances known to man. 6) AR/Hololens:   Microsoft have created a headset that creates real holograms wherever you look. You have the ability to customize these holograms, and put them all over your house. This is probably one of the most amazing technologies ever created, and a serious rival to virtual reality. Hololens is meant to help you in everyday life. One example was someone who wanted to fix their kitchen sink but didn’t know how, so the Hololens produced a hologram instructing them how. The Hololens has the ability to make a hologram of anything, including people, and objects 5) Invisibility:   Susumu Tachi invented a real almost invisibility cloak. The cloak takes a picture of whatever’s behind him and then projects it onto the front of his clothes, creating the illusion of invisibility, this is known as Retro-Reflectum. This is a list of the 5 smartest kids in the world. 5) Sherwyn Sarabi:    He learnt to read at only 10 months old, and was accepted into Mensa at age three. He started school at age three, and was studying work nine, and ten year olds would do. A psychologist described him as extremely intelligent, and also noted that he had great social skills, which was surprising considering his superior intellect. Sherwyns IQ is an impressive 160 which is the highest you can gain on the Whechsler scale, making him one of the smartest kids in the world. 4) Dylan Toh:   Dylan is another rare child genius, he wasn’t satisfied with what he was being taught in school, and spent time learning outside of school as well.  He quickly outmatched other students his age, and was accepted for an acceleration in Mathematics. He was then taught Maths problems for students much older than himself. Dylan has already learnt maths that would place him in the best Universities around the world. 3) Farrell Wu:   Farrell started to learn Maths at only one years old. He got bored, and just happened to pick up an encyclopedia. 5 Dinosaurs still alive today: From a Frilled shark with 300 teeth, to a colossal 18 ft sturgeon. This is a list of 5 Dinosaurs still alive today. 5) Frilled Shark: Frilled sharks were alive during the Cretaceous period which started around 145 million years ago, and can still be found today. The frilled shark has 300 razor sharp teeth, and It can grow to two metres in length. Because of it’s snake like appearance it has often been mistaken for mythical sea serpents. They feed mostly on squid, and live in the deep reaches of the ocean. It is rare for humans to ever encounter a frilled shark, but it has occasionally been caught by fishermen. 4) Hagfish:   The oldest fossil found of this species is from 300 million years ago, this was the Triassic era. The hag fish was alive millions of years before the dinosaurs, and for millions of years after they died. The hag fish’s ability to survive appears to be insurmountable. According to it’s fossil the hag fish have barely changed, since it was around so long ago. The hag fish is one of the most bizarre animals you’ll ever read about, it has a skull, but no spine, two brains, near blindness, and it excretes a slimey substance to damage the gills of other fish.
